The video, linked below, of the Munk debate on the title topic is a must-see for everyone, regardless of their position on the question. It should be required viewing in schools. The debate is on the question that could be considered the foundational issue of The Circle and the Substack.
Motion: Be it Resolved, anti-Zionism is antisemitism.
For the purpose of the debate, the following definitions were adopted:
Antisemitism: “Hate directed at Jewish people, or cruel and unfair treatment of people because they are Jewish.”
Anti-Zionism: Opposition to Zionism, defined as, “The movement for the self-determination and statehood for the Jewish people in their ancestral homeland, the land of Israel.”
The motion was defended by Douglas Murray and Natasha Hausdorff. Against the motion were Mehdi Hasan and Gideon Levy.
We will resist the temptation to share our opinions—just watch it! The video is available on the Munk Debate website. Unfortunately, this requires a fee—$25 donation, which grants you an access to all their material for a year. (A free version on YouTube was taken down due to copyright issues).
You can also read Jerry Coyne’s summary of the debate—sharp as always: “The Munk debate: Is anti-Zionism the same thing as antisemitism? A video well worth watching!”
It’s a good video. Well worth watching.
